Nicole Garton-Jones, Lawyer and Mediator

Nicole Garton-Jones is a lawyer and mediator and practices wills, estates, elder and family law. Nicole founded and is the managing partner of Heritage Law, which is regularly featured in the media about its use of technology and innovative approach to the practice of law.

Nicole received a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of British Columbia and was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 2001. She is a member of the Wills and Estates and Family Law sections of the Canadian Bar Association, the Estate Planning Council of BC, Collaborative Divorce Vancouver and the BC Civil Mediation Roster. Nicole has been a guest instructor on Law Office Management, Wills and Estates and Mediation for the Law Society of BC Professional Legal Training Course. Nicole is a graduate of Leadership Vancouver and the Womens’ Campaign School and is on the board of Continuing Legal Education BC and the West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce.

Karen Redmond, Lawyer and Mediator

Karen Redmond is a partner of Heritage Law and practices in the areas of family law, estate and trust litigation and mediation. Karen received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario, a Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Laws from the University of British Columbia and was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 2004. Karen has appeared at all levels of Court in BC, including the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal. Karen has experience in all aspects of family law, understands divorce and separation from the client’s perspective and knows first hand that every situation is unique and requires careful consideration concerning approach and resolution. Tanya Murray, Lawyer

Tanya Murray is a solicitor practicing in the areas of estate planning, estate administration, corporate and family law. She also has several years of experience in corporate finance and commercial law. Tanya has an Arts Degree and a Law Degree from the University of British Columbia and was called to the British Columbia Bar in 1997. She has been an instructor at courses for the Continuing Legal Education Society of B.C. and is the author of a chapter of the B.C. Company Law Practice Manual. Steve Andrea, Lawyer

Steve Andrea primarily practices in the areas of estate administration, estates and trusts litigation and general civil litigation. Steve received a Bachelor of Science degree and a Bachelor of Education degree from St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia. After a career as a high school teacher and vice principal, he obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of British Columbia in 2005 and was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 2006. He has appeared in all levels of court in B.C. Steve focuses his attention on the representation of beneficiaries, trustees, executors, and guardians in estate litigation proceedings, including wills variation claims, proof of will claims, trust and unjust enrichment claims and abuse of powers of attorney and trustee actions. He represents clients on incapacity matters, including committeeship and adult guardianship applications. Steve also advises executors and administrators on estate administration matters, including interpretation of wills, variation of trusts and contested court approval of estate accounts. Steve is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and the Trial Lawyers Association of B.C.

Myrle Lawrence, Lawyer

Myrle Lawrence has been a wills and estates solicitor for 27 years, is now semi-retired and is associate counsel with Heritage Law. Myrle meets with clients in our West Vancouver office. Myrle is an accomplished cook, traveller and is currently taking a writing course at UBC.

Susan Schweighardt, Estate Planning, Real Estate and Corporate Paralegal

Susan Schweighardt is our wills, estates, corporate and real estate paralegal and assists with the firm’s general administration.

She started her legal career in 1986 after she obtained her legal assistant certification from BCIT in Maple Ridge, BC. She worked for a small notary office in Maple Ridge, prior to moving to a downtown Vancouver office, then on to Whistler, finally settling on the Sunshine Coast.

She has worked on the solicitor’s side of practice for over 20 years in the areas of corporate/commercial, residential and commercial real estate, fisheries and estate planning.

When Susan is not working, she spends time with her busy, active family. She volunteers and keeps involved at the school her daughters attend.

Elizabeth Markus, Director of Knowledge Management and Paralegal

Since launching her legal career in 1987, Elizabeth has worked in diverse practice areas, including business and corporate, wills and estates, civil litigation and family law. On obtaining her Legal Assistant Diploma in Toronto, Ontario, she first worked for a small intellectual property law firm in London, Ontario, while completing her degree at the University of Western Ontario. Since relocating to British Columbia in 1991, she has continued to work in broad practice areas, most intensively in the areas of estate administration, family law and civil litigation.

In her spare time, she enjoys interior design projects, singing, and readings on art history, in which she holds a Master’s Degree.

Leslie McDougall Family Law and General Litigation Paralegal

Leslie McDougall is a certified paralegal and has 20 years’ broad exposure to many areas of law with a primary focus in family law, estate administration and litigation and personal injury/insurance law.

Leslie has extensive experience drafting pleadings and researching legal issues. She has assisted lawyers from the commencement of an action, to interlocutory hearings, and has attended at Supreme Court trials and prepared documentation for the appellate court level.

Leslie also is a legal instructor/author with the Law Courts Center and the Canadian Paralegal Institute.

In her spare time, Leslie plays flute with the South Fraser Community Band. Since 2000, Leslie has been a volunteer and member for the Kiwanis Fraser Valley International Music Festival.
